NAIROBI NATIONAL MUSEUM
The Nairobi National Museum, situated on Museum Hill near Uhuru Highway between Nairobi’s Central Business District and Westlands, serves as a premier institution for exploring Kenya’s rich cultural and natural heritage. Established in 1910 by the East Africa Natural History Society, the museum has evolved into a multifaceted establishment under the National Museums of Kenya (NMK), which manages numerous regional museums, sites, and monuments across the country.
Exhibitions and Collections:
The museum’s exhibits are organized into four primary themes:
- Culture: Displays highlighting Kenya’s diverse ethnic communities, traditional practices, and artifacts.
- Nature: Exhibits showcasing the country’s biodiversity, including taxidermy specimens and information on various ecosystems.
- History: Galleries detailing Kenya’s historical development, from ancient times to the modern era.
- Contemporary Art: Rotating exhibitions featuring works by Kenyan and international artists.
A notable attraction is the life-size fiberglass model of Ahmed, the famous elephant that became a symbol of Kenya during the 1980s poaching crisis. Ahmed was placed under 24-hour guard by President Jomo Kenyatta and is commemorated in the museum’s inner courtyard.

Within the museum compound, visitors can also explore:
- Nairobi Snake Park: A facility showcasing a variety of snake species and other reptiles.
